Introspective and moody, the music of the Russian composers projects the warmth and emotional depth which are precious gifts for chamber music lovers. This Holiday season three brilliant musicians, violinist Misha Keylin, cellist Zlatomir Fung, and pianist Pavel Nersessian, are teaming up for an elegiac program of music by Lyadov, Glinka, and Tchaikovsky.

Veteran BBC radio host and musicologist Stephen Johnson leads an illustrated lecture on the three Russian composers on the bill, exploring the theme of the Russian elegy. Johnson is a writer, broadcaster and lecturer on music.

Mikhail Glinka (1804-1857), influenced by the rich folk tradition and orthodox church chants in the Russian province which he heard in childhood, is considered to be the grandfather of Russian classical music. Better known for the distinctly Russian operas, his oeuvre includes expressive chamber music written yearly in his career. Glinka’s work had inspired a plethora of Russian composers including Tchaikovsky and Lyadov.

Treat yourself for an evening of exceptional music played by the amazing young musicians.

Immersive is a buzz word in a lot of disciplines from theater to engineering to art. Now you can get an immersive experience with a symphony orchestra. The highly acclaimed Maestro David Bernard and Park Avenue Chamber Symphony invites its audiences to sit right next to the musicians at their InsideOut Concerts.

The 2019-2020 InsideOut Concert season starts with the Sounds of America events on November 23, 2019 at The Dimenna Center for Classical Music. Covering American modern history from the austerity of the frontier exploration to the jazzy vibe of the Golden Age era to an all-American Romeo and Juliet love tale in Bernstein’s West Side Story, the program of music by Copland and Bernstein is bound to touch the hearts and minds of the audience in the almost literal sense. The movements of the bows in the string section, the clarity of the sound from the wind instruments absorbed while sitting next to the musicians and the tense beat of the percussionists will pull everyone in the sound fabric created under the maestro Bernard’s baton. Once experienced, that special appreciation of tuning in with those who make the music will stay with the concert-goers forever.

Elliott Forest, a beloved WQXR Radio Personality and multi-media producer, designed a montage of images that will be projected while the orchestra will perform Copland’s Appalachian Spring Suite.  The combination of music, experienced from within the orchestra, and the visuals selected by Forrest, will be unforgettable.

Aspect Chamber Music Series continues its season with Haunted Minds program. Music by Shostakovich and Bartok will be performed by Ariel Quartet with the illuminated talk by musicologist Nicholas Chong. Chong will dive deep into the circumstances and traumatic experiences that made lasting impressions on the composers. While quite different at their core, those experiences influenced not only composers’ day to day life but also led to an inward search for inspiration.

Shostakovich’s String Quartet No. 8 included in the program is interpreted as a requiem written Shostakovich to himself. In the atmosphere of distrust and political scapegoating orchestrated by Stalin’s regime, Shostakovich came under criticism for the complexity of his compositions and its incomprehensibility by the laypeople of Soviet Union. Rightfully fearing for his life and liberty, Shostakovich wrote String Quartet No. 8 as a musical response to personal crises. It is full of references to his prior works and his musical monogram. The music by both composers reveals a lot about how the confrontation with darkness can ultimately lead back to the light.

Recipient of numerous international awards, the Ariel Quartet is well known to audiences around the globe for the depth of musical interpretation and its passionate performances. The concert on November 14, 2019 will surely be no exception offering a delightful evening for music lovers.

Renown for its exquisite assortment of the works by old masters, the Frick Collection presents the arrangements Elective Affinities by the modern sculptor and author Edmund de Waal. The prior success of De Waal’s – installations at the historic sites alongside his passion for porcelain and its history and his fascination about the diaspora and memoir make the gilded halls of the Frick Museum a perfect space to showcase his art. He is the first living artist invited to exhibit there.

Inspired by the museum collection of grand works by Gainesboro, Fragonard, Goya, and Ingres, de Waal’s minimalist installations augment the permanent collection and shine new light on its significance.

The elegance of the Elective Affinities opens a new perspective on the meaning of art and the power of inspiration. Adding fluidity and minimalism of expression, the installations bring well-fitting modernity to the time tested artworks.

Pace your way through the main halls of the Frick allowing for some extra time in each gallery to absorb de Waal’s stories behind each arrangement while contemplating on the continuity of art over the four centuries. The exhibition is accompanied by the passionate and exciting audio narration by the artist. Audio stories can be found on the museum website.
