CELEBRATING 100 YEARS OF JAZZ

The collaboration between New York Botanical Garden and Catskilll Jazz Factory brings the summer concert program Jazz & CHIHULY to the scenic Conservatory lawn of the garden. The second concert in the series is a celebration of 100 years of American Jazz from it’s folk roots to such american classics like Scott Joplin, Louis Armstrong and Bessie Smith. The program brings together bandleader Chris Washburne on trombone, Brazilian pianist Andre Mehmari , vocalist Brianna Thomas and friends.

The concert series are part of elaborate program around the CHIHULY glass sculpture exhibition on the grounds of New York Botanical Garden. 20 works are spread-out on over 250 acres, including artist’s early drawings and more recent creations. This is the second collaboration between Dale Chihuly and NYBG as his art naturally blends in with the nature and seems to be destined to be exhibited at NYBG. The first exhibition was held in 2006 attracting 350,000 visitors.

Chihuly stresses the uniqueness of glass as the only material that lets the light through. In his works he capitalizes on this property of the material. With that in mind, garden environment is an ideal showroom for seeing Chihuly’s works as it gives viewers a chance to see the changes in light and its reflection in the ponds depending on time of day. Playing on this notion, the nighttime illumination adds some magic to the works. The garden will be open late for the visitors to experience it.

The concertgoers will have a chance to view CHIHULY exhibition in daylight and with the nighttime illumination after the performance.

2017 Lincoln Center Festival: H’Sao Band Performance on July 28

A cappella performance mixing melodies from Chad with modern world soul and jazz

This amazing Montreal-based band was formed in 2001 when three brothers teamed up with their childhood friend to start performing. Using only their voice at first and adding musical instruments later the group caught the attention of the music fans and gained popularity in Montreal, Canada. H’Sao style can be described as Afro-fusion or Afro-jazz defined by authentic vocal harmonies, electrifying rhythm and stunning dance.

Masterly mixing a cappella singing from their native Chad with the new world gospels, soul and jazz music the group had established itself on the music scene. It travels around the world participating in the prominent musical festivals and events from New Zealand and Australia to Europe, Asia and Americas. Their lyrics are addressing the issues of social justice, love and peace.

Powerful program for Summer Chamber music lineup

Daniil Trifonov, 26-year-old Russian pianist, is already well known to the audiences around the world for his amazing technique and poetic sensitivity in delivering the most challenging programs. The selection of works for this year Summer concert at Caramoor is exactly in that category.

Trifonov became an international sensation in 2011 when he won the first prize in the Tchaikovsky competition. From that time on he is a regular at major concert halls with dedicated fans eagerly anticipating his every performance. And he never disappoints. The New Yorker magazine in its review of this year performance at Carnegie Hall notes that Trifonov “creates furor”.

In the program at Caramoor, Trifonov starts with Schumann including Kreisleriana; followed by a selection of Preludes and Fugues by Shostakovich and ending with the movements from Stravinsky’s Petrushka. Expect a lot of energy and clarity in tone as these serious pieces require from a performer. Trifonov’s virtuosity and depth will delight you and make that night an affair to remember!

Historic Green-Wood Cemetery: Public Art Project “Here Lie the Secrets of Visitors of Green-Wood Cemetery”

A fascinating public art project will take place at the historic Green-Wood Cemetery in Brooklyn, NY. The cemetery, founded in 1838, is a designated Historic Landmark. It is well-known for its peaceful beauty and for being a resting place for many prominent public figures.

The Creative Time is organizing this public art project with French conceptualist Sophie Calle. The artist is well known for her installations and books exploring the questions of intimacy, identity and relationships often using her own experience as a subject of her work. She had represented her country at 2007 Venice Biennale.

The project at the Green-Wood Cemetery will kick-off on April 29 with a two-day event with the artists on hand and will continue through 2042. A marble obelisk designed by the artists will be installed amid the graves. The obelisk will have a mailbox-like opening for visitors to slide in their secret messages and to unburden themselves from the secrets. The messages will be buried in the grave beneath the obelisk. The project will be ongoing during cemetery visiting hours through 2042.

The Artnet preview of the project quotes Creative Time artistic director Nato Thompson noting that this “personal, and yet also public act” is particularly urgent at the time of social upheaval like ours.
