Robert Schumann, the most intimate yet the least understood of the Romantic composers of the mid-19th century, has an air of mystery about his music. Oxana Mikhailoff’s and Vassily Primakov’s performance of the Complete Sonatas at the Bronxville Women’s Club will lift the veil of mystery from Schumann’s music. The lecture “Schumann – The Complicated Genius” by musicologist Dr. Lisa Yui is preceding the program.

The pianists of high-acclaim, Mikhailoff and Primakov are well regarded by the critics and the public. American Record Guide compares Primakov’s playing to Gilels’ noting that since “Gilels, how many pianists have the right touch?” Mikhailoff is well-known for her poetic and sensitive style, essential for bringing Schumann’s music to the audience.

Lyrical, alluring and disarming, Deborah Karpel’s performance in The Midwood Miracle is a delicious treat and a familial story at the same time. Premiered in New York City in 2017, the show on Sunday, March 17 at 1:00 pm is part of the Jewish Heritage Series at Congregations Shaare Shamayim Synagogue in Philadelphia, PA.

The show performed by Deborah Karpel with Michael Lewis Smith at the piano and directed by Aimee Todoroff tells a family story about a Jewish girl growing up in coal mining Appalachia, VA. Some details of the script are fictional, some are taken from family archives. Vivid elements of life in Appalachia, where Karpel’s mother grew up, are followed by the urban tales set in Brooklyn, NY. The scenes of how the character’s parents met, their ideals and a mixup of quirky twists are wonderfully delivered by Karpel’s amazing performance and singing. The original compositions co-written by Karpel with Ted Kociolek and Rachelle Garniez are perfectly mashed along with traditional Americana, western swing, operatic arias, improvised art songs, and Yiddish songs. Mills Mansion, known now as Staatsburgh State Historic Site is a hidden treasure for history buffs and nature fans. Located just under 2-hour drive or train ride from the City, this peaceful and striking estate offers both a chance to travel back in time to see the Gilded Age splendor and to enjoy the serenity of nature by mighty Hudson River. The site which belonged to Mills family and known as Mills Mansion before it was donated to the State of New York in 1938 is open for tours and offers a program of special events.

Mills Mansion and the Ogden Mills & Ruth Livingston Mills State Park surrounding it offer a deep dive into the intricacies of American history and the life of American aristocracy at the turn of 20th century, and an unparalleled beauty of the hiking trails running along the river and in the sprawling hills of the estate.

A peaceful hamlet of Staatsburgh, NY is across the road. Now quiet and sleepy, it leads its origin from the land patent in the 1690s to Dutch settlers. The hamlet has a historic church and used to have Staatsburgh train station for easy connection to the city.
