Vijay Iyer, MacArthur “Genius”, comes to the venerable club Jazz Standard in midtown Manhattan for a series of performances with his trio and in the solo shows.  Iyer, a powerful pianist, composer, and bandleader, holds a very special place among the contemporary jazz musicians. The critics note the potency and “physicality” of his music as described by The Guardian.

Both of his groups – the Trio and the Sextet – are well known to the music fans. In this engagement, the Trio will surely not disappoint the lucky audience. Performances by Iyer and his musicians are intense and are calling for deep concentration with little time for introductions and time taking reminiscence of the origins of the compositions. Hold your breath, immerse yourself in the sound and enjoy every second of the music!           BUY TICKETS

Iyer’s interest in music started from childhood years. He has been playing in the school orchestra and continued performing when was at Yale University which he graduated with a degree in Physics and Mathematics. He then pursued his scientific and musical explorations at the University of California at Berkeley getting a Ph. D. in the cognitive science of music. In addition to performing and writing his own compositions, he is the Franklin D. and Florence Rosenblatt Professor of the Arts at Harvard University. Before Harvard University he was teaching at Manhattan School of Music, NYU and The New School.

Iyer started playing professionally with Steve Coleman, a bandleader, and a saxophone player back when he was still at Berkeley.

In talking to Oberlin Review at the time when was holding a residency at Oberlin Conservatory in April 2017, he stressed the importance of keeping the music within “the living context” and for the artists to think broadly about the world and their responsibility in serving it.

Vijay Iyer, a 2013 MacArthur Fellow, had been “the most lauded piano player in jazz” according to The New Yorker profile in 2016. It is quite interesting that in that same profile the fact that Iyer until then was not invited to play at Village Vanguard was brought up. The record is corrected now when Iyer had performed there with his Trio in May 2017.

Vijay Iyer Sextet includes Iyer on piano, Graham Haynes on cornet, flugelhorn, electronics, Steve Lehman on alto saxophone, Mark Shim on tenor saxophone, Nick Dunston on bass, Jeremy Dutton on drums. The band is recognized as “Jazz Band of the Year” by the 22nd annual Jazz Journalists Association Jazz Awards.
