Returning to Birdland Jazz Club after a memorable gig there in February of 2019, Cyrille Aimee is bringing her new collection of songs from Sondheim songbook for a pre-holiday run. Diving deep into the oeuvre of the beloved American composer and songwriter, Aimee aims higher than just presenting a beautiful rendition of the familiar music and lyrics. It is a touchingly personal story of the singer’s life and emotions. Aimee’s crisp and delicate voice, playful style, a dizzying mix of jazz, soul and ethnic vibe makes it that more memorable.

In her bio, she writes that for her “improvisation is not just a technique. It’s a way of life, one that has not only allowed her to share her engaging voice and sparkling creativity with the world, but has led her on an unexpected journey.”

By opening herself to the whim of the moment, Aimée has ventured from singing on street corners in Europe to dazzling audiences at some of the world’s most prestigious jazz festivals; from sneaking out to sing in gypsy encampments in her native France to acting on Broadway; from braving the notoriously tough audiences at New York’s Apollo Theatre to being hailed by The Wall Street Journal as “one of the most promising jazz singers of her generation” and called a “rising star in the galaxy of jazz singers” by the New York Times.

Treat yourself with a night of great songs by Cyrille Aimee on November 19 – 23, 2019 at Birdland, the the hottest club in town. BUY TICKETS

Born in Fontainebleau, France and raised in the village of Samois-sur-Seine where a famous french gypsy jazz musician Django Reinhardt lived, Cyrille Aimee had a chance to learn and experience jazz music from her school days. Aimee writes in her bio that with easy proximity to the place of the annual Django Reinhardt Festival held at Samois-sur-Seine which attracts gypsy musicians from around the world, she was sneaking out from her bedroom to hear the musicians at the encampment. Her rebellious character can be heard in her singing and in the selection of songs to perform.

In 2012 Aimee had won Sarah Vaughan Jazz Vocal Competition which invigorated her international career. Her singing can be described as mixing Sarah Vaughan in name and Michael Jackson in electronics. Her deceptively easygoing yet skillful introduction of the loop machine at one of her concerts had a stunning effect on the audience. “She is a one-woman rhythm machine” in the words of New York Times music critic S. Holden.  The AllAboutJazz calls her “the face of post-modernity”.
